My name is Johanna Jacobson and I am the School Counselor at Skinner North Classical School. I received my Master's Degree in School Counseling from Saint Xavier University in 2008 and have been working as a School Counselor in the Chicago Public Schools since that time. I have a Professional Educator's Licence certified in the state of Illinois, am trained in the American School Counseling Association National Model and am a Certified Bullying Specialist. This will be my 4th year here at Skinner North, and I'm thrilled to continue to expand the counseling program to provide the services our students need.
As the Skinner North School Counselor, I work in a number of different capacities throughout the school building. My main role is providing social emotional, academic and career counseling services to Skinner North students. This is accomplished through Classroom Guidance, Small Group Counseling and Individual Counseling. If you would like to refer your child for counseling service, please fill out the referral form found on this website, or contact me via phone at 773-534-0004. School Counseling services are meant to be short term interventions to address issues that are affecting a student's academic performance. If you feel your child may need long term or more intensive counseling services, I do have a list of outside referrals available upon request. My Blog posts will be updated when new small groups and classroom guidance lessons are starting.
In addition to my role as Counselor, I also serve as the Special Education Case Manager for Skinner North. In this role, I am responsible for coordinating the IEP and 504 Plan processes for students with disabilities. Additionally, I coordinate the scheduling of our Special Education teachers and Special Education Classroom Assistants, ensure that students with disabilities are receiving the services they are entitled to, collaborate with parents to assist them through the special education referral process, consult with teachers about accommodations and modifications, and help create Behavior Intervention Plans for students. For information on how to navigate the IEP and 504 Plan processes, please see the Special Education Information page of this website.
Some of the other roles I perform in the school are: Transportation Coordinator, Students In Temporary Living Conditions Liaison, Second Step Coordinator, Academic Center and High School Articulation, Student Records Management, NWEA/MAP Test Administrator, and Peer Conferencing Mentor. I am always more than happy to consult with parents regarding any concerns you might have for your child.
